Configurations

Electrical components which turn lights on and off and allow electricity to flow to various appliances usually reside in boxes inside walls. These boxes are called "gang" boxes and the number of components inside the boxes are usually called "gangs."  The number of gangs inside a box can vary. The box, because it leaves  a hole in the wall, is usually covered by a "light switch cover or plate." The cover or plate usually has openings in it for screws, switches of various kinds, and/or receptacles for plugs. Judy Stone refers to the type and number of openings in a switch cover as the cover's configuration. She can make any configuration for a switch cover.

Names for the various configurations which can be part of an enameled light switch cover may vary. Please refer to the name of the configuration corresponding to the drawing below when requesting a custom switch cover. Your request might be for a single toggle or double decora, or a combination of any of the three standard configurations.

Standard United States Gang Configurations include:

Drawing of toggle configuration Drawing of outlet configuration Drawing of decora configuration
toggle outlet
(duplex receptacle)
decora or GFI

Non-Standard Configurations include:

  • Screw holes only

  • Pushbuttons

  • "Utility" switches ( smaller hole than the outlet cover).

Dimmer knobs fit over a spindle which fits through a standard toggle opening. Stone does not make enameled dimmer knobs.
