Enameled Objects for the Home

Judy Stone is one of a small group of people worldwide who call themselves enamelists. Enameling, the centuries-old process of fusing glass to metal with high heat, is a very difficult medium to control. It requires that the enamelist understand the intricate dance of metal, glass and heat. It demands an understanding of color used three-dimensionally. Judy Stone, whether she's creating sculptural vessels or large-scale wall pieces, is an enamel artist in complete control of her medium.

News from the Enameling Studio

Looking out to the garden

There is a peach tree in the yard which I can see from one of my studio windows.  The tree has had cankers and peach leaf curl and, for many years, it only bore one peach per year. That peach always seemed like a treasure, well worth the wait to be savored. But I felt it was a great effort of a supposedly dying tree to put forth one precious fruit per year. However, for the past three years it has produced a sizeable crop of large beautiful peaches. This summer the tree's harvest is again bountiful, the fruit large and savory, and . . . well I can't carry this analogy too far, but I am feeling quite energetic these days. I am putting in long and intense days in the studio working on my vessels and a commissioned wall piece.

I went to Greece in May. The last time I was in Greece was 23 years ago when I spent a summer on the island of Hydra. Before that I had visited Greece several times. My work has always reflected the colors, history, architecture, and ineffable character of this complex country, but it was time to renew an old acquaintance. The trip took me to places I had been before: Athens, the eastern Peloponnese, the islands off the Peloponnesian coast, including Hydra. Many images from my trip to Greece have been incorporated into my latest wall piece, which will be installed after completion in Hemet, CA, at the end of July.

Photo of Kaori in the studioI have an intern for the summer from Academy of Art University who has been assisting me in the studio while she learns more about enameling and the marketplace. Kaori's internship has been an invaluable asset to me. She is meticulous when I am not. She is not afraid to express her ideas and opinions, which I value highly. I will miss her when she goes back to Japan at the end of the internship.

I am planning an event for later in the Fall to sell the remaining enameled light switch covers I have in stock. Contact me to find out about this event and to inquire about remaining switch cover back stock. For those of you just tuning in, I discontinued making the covers in December 2008.
